I hate Virgin Megastore. I went in there on Friday, just to check it out, and because I was already in the mall to buy the new Star Wars book, Labyrinth of Evil, which Waterstones (big UK book chain) didn't have, and I probably shouldn't have.
But I'm a weak man.
They had a sale on, three DVDs for twenty squid. It was funny, at first I couldn't see anything I wanted. Then I spied the new special edition of THE LOST BOYS, which I've wanted to get for a while. It's dead cheesy, and terminally 80s, but still, I wanted it. Luckily, after digging I found two other worthy companions; THE PRODUCERS and MONTY PYTHON'S THE MEANING OF LIFE, which I still think is close to the most offensive movie ever. From John Cleese fucking his wife in front of his private school class to Michael Palin cutting out the Jewish rastafarian's liver, it's still an edgy experience, but no less hilarious for it. So overall, good purchases. My copy of the Criterion ONIBABA also arrived this weekend, so that'll get a viewing tonight.
But the best thing about this week was finally seeing Jean Renoir's RULES OF THE GAME. I need to watch it again and write a proper review, but this movie was just absolutely fucking astonishing in every way. Colour me stunned, folks.
That's it for now. I'll report back when I've viewed the Japanese titties.

I love... carpet
'I love... desk. I love lamp.'
'Brick, are you just looking at things around the office?'
'I love lamp.'
'What a beautiful rainbow.'
'Do me on it!'
ANCHORMAN. So fucking great.

Really Fucking Illogical
I just picked up the classiest CD on Earth - SPACED OUT: THE VERY BEST OF LEONARD NIMOY AND WILLIAM SHATNER, and it's just awesome. Obviously, Shatner's value as a musician has been debated and parodied since the sixties, but not many people have said much about Nimoy. That should change.
I remember ages ago, BBC2 devoted a whole Star Trek night, where they showed various favourite episodes, movies, plus documentaries on the show. One of them was on music from the show, and from its stars, and it was there where I was introduced to such classics as Nimoy's 'Highly Illogical' and 'The Ballad of Bilbo Baggins,' as well as Shatner's legendary cover of 'Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds.' It was hilarious then, and it's hilarious now. The best thing is I only paid three squid for it. Awesome work.
It's funny about Shatner. The guy's always been a total object of ridicule from everyone as being this totally awful actor, but y'know, I don't think he's always that bad. People totally have a case that he can be wooden, but when he's on his game, he gives some fine work. It's funny, he's like Sean Connery and Marlon Brando, where at one point in history, he stopped being an actor and just became William Shatner. And sometimes it works, and sometimes it doesn't. But if you look at his performances in STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN, STAR TREK III: THE SEARCH FOR SPOCK, and STAR TREK IV: THE VOYAGE HOME, he actually comes across really well, especially in KHAN. Part IV is based on his charisma and comic timing more than anything, but the last two really have Shatner, well, emoting. At the end of II, where he reads his speech at Spock's funeral, that's just fucking heartbreaking, and a really great moment.
Just give the guy good material, and he's there.

The Top Fifty
This is something I do pretty regularly, and I usually rearrange all the time. I haven't done it for a while, so I thought this might be a good way to start this new blog off.
The only rule is that for series. With some series, I'll put the actual names of the films in, but I'll put the name of the film I like best in bold. There are some movies where the film counts for all of them, and others where it's just the individual film, so where it's just one name, that means it's just that one movie. Hope that makes sense.
It's always important to note that these aren't necessarily the best films, just my favourites.
